Song of the Day #6,033: ‘Feather’ – Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter has released six albums since 2015, a fact that makes her Best New Artist Grammy nomination a bit of a head-scratcher.

The song at #25 on last year’s Billboard year-end Hot 100 is from her fifth album, 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send. ‘Feather’ was released as a single from the deluxe edition of that album, and became her first song to reach the Top 40 (it peaked at #21). Of course, her next three singles all reached the top three, so I guess it’s that “overnight” success the Grammys are acknowledging.

‘Feather’ is aptly titled — it’s a sparkling bit of disco pop as light and buoyant as its namesake. It also contains the seeds of the irresistible gems to come on last year’s Short n’ Sweet.

[Verse 1]
Oh, it’s like that, I’m your dream come true
When it’s on a platter for you
Then you pull back when I try to make plans
More than two hours in advance, mm

[Pre-Chorus]
I slam the door, I hit ignore
I’m saying, “No, no, no, no more”
I got you blocked, after this, an afterthought
I finally cut you off

[Chorus]
I feel so much lighter like a feather with you off my mind (Ah)
Floatin’ through the memories like whatever, you’re a waste of time (Ah)
Your signals are mixed, you act like a bitch
You fit every stereotype, “Send a pic”
I feel so much lighter like a feather with you out my life
With you out my life

[Post-Chorus]
(Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do)
(Do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do)
Like a feather, like a feather, like a feather, yeah

[Verse 2]
It feels so good
Not carin’ where you are tonight
And it feels so good
Not pretendin’ to like the wine you like

[Pre-Chorus]
I slam the door (Slam the door), I hit ignore (Hit ignore)
I’m saying, “No, no, no, no more”
I got you blocked, excited to never talk, I
I’m so sorry for your loss

[Chorus]
I feel so much lighter like a feather with you off my mind (Ah)
Floatin’ through the memories like whatever, you’re a waste of time (Ah)
Your signals are mixed, you act like a bitch (A bitch)
You fit every stereotype, “Send a pic”
I feel so much lighter like a feather with you out my life
With you out my life

[Post-Chorus]
(Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do)
Ah, mm
(Do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do)
Like a feather, like a feather, like a feather

[Bridge]
You want me? I’m done
You miss me? No duh
Where I’m at, I’m up where I’m at
You want me? I’m done (I’m done)
You miss me? No duh (No duh)
Where I’m at, I’m up (I’m up) where I’m at

[Outro]
You want me? I’m done
(I feel so much lighter like a feather with you off my mind)
You miss me? No duh
Where I’m at, I’m up where I’m at
(Like a feather, like a feather, like a feather)
You want me? I’m done
(I feel so much lighter like a feather with you off my mind)
You miss me? No duh
Where I’m at, I’m up where I’m at
(Like a feather, like a feather, like a feather, yeah)

I tried to watch Sabrina Carpenter on NPR’s Tiny Desk, but ultimately felt forced to turn it off after Amy kept repeatedly/annoyingly accusing me of only watching because I had a crush on Carpenter. I deny having a crush, but admit I really like the songs I have heard from her.

I too admit to loving Sabrina’s music and to the crush lol

  3. Amy says:

I’m always fascinated by the “overnight sensation” stories who were grinding for years before anyone took notice. There should be two categories and awards… the lightning in a bottle award for those whose first effort was not only solid but, against all odds, founds its way to a wide warmest. And a second for those whose first effort kept on keeping on, doing good work for years before anyone took”the industry” finally paid attention.

I’d guess there are far more in that second category.
