Song of the Day #5,989: ‘White Flag’ – Dido

English singer-songwriter Dido, whose debut album No Angel sold more than 15 million copies worldwide… now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.

Dido had modest success in the UK following the release of No Angel, but it was the inclusion of the first verse of the song ‘Thank You’ on Eminem’s ‘Stan’ that brought her international fame. Her ethereal vocals served as a perfect backdrop for his take on a homicidally obsessed fan.

That album, as well as its follow-up (2003’s Life for Rent) went on to huge success in the UK, becoming two of the top ten albums of the decade. They also went multi-Platinum in the U.S. and spawned seven top 40 hits (including today’s SOTD).

I owned and enjoyed both of those albums, but that’s where my knowledge of Dido stopped. Apparently I wasn’t alone, because her next three albums (released across 16 years) didn’t make much of a splash. She has continued working, though, often as a writer or featured voice for other artists.

She also got a writing credit on Rihanna’s 2016 song ‘Never Ending,’ due to the latter having melodic similarities to ‘Thank You.’ That was definitely the song that kept on giving.

[Verse 1]
I know you think that I shouldn’t still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn’t say it, well, I’d still have felt it
Where’s the sense in that?
I promise I’m not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

[Chorus]
But I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love and always will be

[Verse 2]
I know I left too much mess and destruction
To come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can’t talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of “it’s over”
Then I’m sure that that makes sense

[Chorus]
But I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love and always will be

[Bridge]
And when we meet
Which I’m sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I’ll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I’ve moved on

[Chorus]
I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love and always will be
I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love and always will be

[Outro]
I will go down with this ship
And I won’t put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I’m in love and always will be

I had thought that Dido was sort of a one hit wonder with “Thank You,” and even that song was more known because of its inclusion on “Stan.” Hearing today’s SOTD, I realize I do know more than one Dido song, though I didn’t know this was her. Perhaps I’ve heard some other songs without knowing they were from Dido.

Anyway, like you and apparently the rest of the world, I haven’t thought about Dido for 20 years..
