Song of the Day #5,984: ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ – Oasis

The last artist I’ll pitch for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inclusion is the Britpop duo Oasis, eligible since 2020 and nominated for the first time this year.

Given the news that famously quarreling brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have put their differences aside to plan a reunion tour next year, it seems like a perfect time to induct them into the Hall. Maybe they’ll still be on speaking terms in time to show up at the ceremony.

Oasis is one of the most popular and influential British bands of all time. Along with rivals Blur, they pretty mush defined the Britpop movement of the 90s. Every one of their albums reached #1 and went multi-Platinum in the UK. And while they weren’t as big in the U.S., a few of those albums went Platinum in the States and they had a top ten hit in ‘Wonderwall.’

The Rock Hall has traditionally been slow to honor acts that had more success in the UK than in America, but I think Oasis will be an exception, especially given their recent reunion.

I do hope to see The Smiths make it in first, but I’ll save that argument for another day!

[Verse 1]
Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don’t you know you might find
A better place to play?
You said that you’d never been
But all the things that you’ve seen
Slowly fade away

[Pre-Chorus]
So I start a revolution from my bed
‘Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside, summertime’s in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out

[Chorus]
And so, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as we’re walkin’ on by
Her soul slides away
But “Don’t look back in anger,” I heard you say

[Verse 2]
Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows
If it’s night or day
Please don’t put your life in the hands
Of a rock ‘n’ roll band
Who’ll throw it all away

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m gonna start a revolution from my bed
‘Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside, ’cause summertime’s in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
‘Cause you ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out

[Chorus]
And so, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as she’s walking on by
My soul slides away
But “Don’t look back in anger,” I heard you say

[Chorus]
So, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as we’re walking on by
Her soul slides away
But “Don’t look back in anger,” I heard you say
So, Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as she’s walking on by
My soul slides away
But “Don’t look back in anger
Don’t look back in anger”
I heard you say

[Outro]
“At least not today”

While I’m not much of a fan, I can see the merit of Oasis getting into the Rock Hall. Now, as for the Smiths….😉
