Song of the Day #5,978: ‘Mr. Sandman’ – The Chordettes

Throwing back to the week of Nov. 16, 1954, Eddie Fisher tops the Billboard hits chart with ‘I Need You Now.’ This was the song’s third straight week at #1, and its last, because it was about to be overtaken by the song at #2.

That was ‘Mr. Sandman’ by The Chordettes. This song would go on to spend seven weeks at #1, giving the vocal quartet their biggest hit (followed closely by ‘Lollipop’ four years later).

‘Mr. Sandman’ was simultaneously released by The Four Aces, whose version peaked at #9 while this one was topping the chart. It’s The Four Aces’ version that plays in Back to the Future when Marty McFly first travels back to 1955.

[Verse 1]
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give him two lips like roses and clover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over
Sandman, I’m so alone
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

[Verse 2]
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give him the word that I’m not a rover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over
Sandman, I’m so alone
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

[Verse 3]
Mr. Sandman (Yes?) Bring us a dream
Give him a pair of eyes with a come-hither gleam
Give him a lonely heart like Pagliacci
And lots of wavy hair like Liberace
Mr. Sandman, someone to hold (Someone to hold)
Would be so peachy before we’re too old
So please turn on your magic beam
Mr Sandman, bring us, please, please, please
Mr Sandman, bring us a dream

Although the song was written by a man, Pat Ballard, he apparently intended the pronouns in the lyrics to be interchangeable depending on whether the singer was a man or woman. I think overall the lyrics work better from a male perspective, though the references to Liberace and Pagliacci in the Chordettes version add a more female perspective. Musically, I would give the nod to the Four Aces version.

I remember singing to this song but I thought it was the McGuire sisters singing it. Brings back memories ❤️
