Song of the Day #5,977: ‘Kick Out the Jams’ – MC5

The next artist inducted into this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Excellence category is the hard rock band MC5. The Michigan-based band’s name is short for Motor City 5, a nod to their Detroit origins.

MC5 was nominated for the Rock Hall in six different years between 2003 and 2022 without making the cut, which must have prompted the Rock Hall’s leadership to bypass the voting process to include them.

MC5 was a loud and politically progressive rock band during the late 60s and early 70s, a clear influence on the punk rock genre and specifically groups like Rage Against the Machine.

MC5 released two studio albums in 1970 and 1971, but their best-known work is their 1969 debut, a live album titled Kick Out the Jams. The title track of that recording has been covered by more than two dozen artists across four decades.

This band was completely off my radar. I’ve written nearly 6,000 Song of the Day posts without once mentioning them. Hard rock just isn’t my thing. It seems they were very influential on the genre, so I can’t argue with their inclusion in the Hall.

[Verse 1]
Well, I feel pretty good, and I guess that I could
Get crazy now, baby
‘Cause we all got in tune a-when my dressing room
Got hazy now, baby
I know how you want it, child, hot, quick and tight
The girls can’t stand it when you’re doin’ it right

[Chorus]
Let me up on the stand
And let me kick out the jam
Yes, kick out the jams
I want to kick ’em out

[Verse 2]
Yes, I’m starting to sweat and now my shirt’s all wet
What a feeling
In the sound that abounds and resounds and rebounds
Off the ceiling
You gotta have it, baby, you can’t do without
When you get that feeling, you gotta sock ’em out

[Chorus]
Put that mic in my hand
And let me kick out the jam
Yes, kick out the jams
I want to kick ’em out

[Verse 3]
So you got to give it up, you know you can’t get enough
Miss McKenzie
‘Cause it gets in your brain, it drives you insane
With the frenzy
The wigglin’ guitars, girl, the crash of the drums
Makes you wanna keep-a-rockin’ ’til morning comes

[Chorus]
Let me be who I am
And let me kick out the jam
Yes, kick out the jams
I done kicked ’em out

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’ve never heard of them either, though the title of this song is vaguely familiar.

Not a fan of their music or the music it inspired.

  2. Peg says:

    Not for me either
