Song of the Day #5,969: ‘Cold as Ice’ – Foreigner

Our next 2024 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a band that fits neatly into the traditional definition of rock and roll. During a time when the Hall is increasingly adding rap, R&B, and country artists to its ranks, Foreigner feels like a throwback.

First eligible in 2003 but not nominated until this year, Foreigner has the numbers to back up their inclusion. The band’s first six albums went multi-Platinum and produced 14 Top 20 hits, including the #1 smash ‘I Want to Know What Love Is,’ plus ‘Waiting for a Girl Like You,’ which set a record for most weeks at #2 without reaching the top spot (10).

Made up of two Brits and two Americans, the band took the name Foreigner because at least half of its members would be just that wherever they went. Lead guitarist Mick Jones and lead singer Lou Gramm were a formidable songwriting duo before tensions led to Gramm leaving the band in the late 80s. Jones is the only original member still touring as Foreigner.

I’m not familiar enough with Foreigner’s whole catalog to assess their Hall of Fame worthiness, but I definitely know the hits. And if album and single sales are a reflection of a band’s impact on the listening public, I can’t argue with their inclusion.

[Verse 1]
You’re as cold as ice
You’re willing to sacrifice our love
You never take advice
Some day, you’ll pay the price
I know

[Chorus]
I’ve seen it before, it happens all the time (Ooh-ooh)
You’re closing the door, you leave the world behind
You’re digging for gold, you’re throwing away (Ah, ah)
A fortune in feelings but, some day, you’ll pay

[Verse 2]
You’re as cold as ice
You’re willing to sacrifice our love
You want paradise
But some day, you’ll pay the price
I know

[Chorus]
I’ve seen it before, it happens all the time (Ooh-ooh)
You’re closing the door, you leave the world behind
You’re digging for gold, you’re throwing away (Ah, ah)
A fortune in feelings but, some day, you’ll pay

[Bridge]
Cold as ice
You know that you are
Cold as ice
As cold as ice to me
Cold as ice

[Outro]
Ooh, ooh, ooh, cold as, cold as ice
You’re as cold as ice
You’re as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know
You’re as cold as ice, yes I know
You’re as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know
You’re as cold as ice, oh, yes I know
You’re as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know
You’re as cold as ice, oh, yes I know
You’re as cold as ice, cold as ice

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Foreigner is one of those 80s bands that went from great rock songs like “Cold as Ice” regularly played on classic rock stations (remember WSHE 103.5?) to commercial pop drivel like “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

Other examples include Styx (from “Too Much Time on My Hands” to the insipid “Mr. Roboto”) and REO Speedwagon (from “Roll with Changes” to the lame “I Can’t Fight this Feeling Anymore”).

Anyway, sellout schlock notwithstanding, I agree Foreigner deserves a place in the Rock Hall.
