Continuing my ranking of the songs on Miranda Lambert’s new album, Postcards from Texas…
#2. ‘Way Too Good at Breaking My Heart’
Another song about chasing the wrong kind of love, and the inability to resist the one person you should be running from. I know I shouldn’t tie everything back to Lambert’s personal life — she’s a storyteller, after all — but I believe this whole album is about the breakup of her first marriage and the tumult of the years that immediately followed.
What I find fascinating is that she’s released four other albums since then and mostly stayed away from those topics. I wonder what prompted her to explore them now.
Here’s what she said in a recent interview: “There’s a lot of bad decisions on this record, but that’s part of growing up. It’s part of the experience, that human experience is figuring it out. You don’t learn from things going great. Throughout this record, there’s a lot of tenderness and living in the moment of the pain. It’s not glorifying it, but explaining.”
I don’t know if today’s song glorifies the bad decisions, but it sure does set them to a gorgeous, shimmering musical backdrop. This track has a bit of a Fleetwood Mac vibe for me, and it’s the one I find myself still singing long after it’s over.
Meltin’ in the makers, another icebreaker
Sippin’ on some trouble and then
It’s a baby blue spirit and every time I’m near it
I’m smokin’ like I never quit
[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I tell myself, “Girl, you oughta know better”
But whatever
[Chorus]
Roller coaster
Boy, you’re the poster child of runnin’ me ’round
Callin’ me up when you’re down
But when it’s over, and everyone’s sober
I see sun on your skin
I wanna do it again
Ooh, man, I know I shouldn’t, but you’re lookin’ pretty good in the dark
Mm, I know how this starts
Damn, I wish I wouldn’t, but you’rе way too good at breaking my heart
[Verse 3]
We been playin’ this a whilе, skippin’ on a vinyl
Lettin’ that needle dig in
Guess I’m still an addict, ’cause somewhere in the static
I pretend that I don’t know how it ends
[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I tell myself, “Girl, you oughta know better”
But whatever
[Chorus]
Roller coaster
Boy, you’re the poster child of runnin’ me ’round
Callin’ me up when you’re down
But when it’s over, and everyone’s sober
I see sun on your skin
I wanna do it again
Ooh, man, I know I shouldn’t, but you’re lookin’ pretty good in the dark
Mm, I know how this starts
Damn, I wish I wouldn’t, but you’re way too good at breaking my heart
Well, since heartache and angst usually leads to more creative and interesting art, it’s not surprising that she would want to tap into those emotions.
