Continuing my ranking of the songs on Miranda Lambert’s new album, Postcards from Texas…
#4. ‘No Man’s Land’
A recurring theme throughout Lambert’s career has been her restlessness. She has written at length about her inability to stay in one place, her desire to discover new people and places.
In ‘No Man’s Land,’ she explores for maybe the first time what that restlessness means when it comes to loving her. This is a warning about the challenge of winning her heart.
Or maybe it’s a blueprint. Lambert’s current husband is a former New York cop who embraced life in the country to be with her. He clearly knew she wasn’t going to change for him, but he seemed willing to change for her.
This is one of four songs I considered for #1 on this list. It’s a real beauty with compelling, emotionally resonant subject matter. I ranked it fourth because it was a pre-release single and I wanted to give a little more love to the deeper cuts.
She might be ninety miles from Pecos
Lightyears from anywhere
Goodbye on her cinnamon breath
Freedom in her hair
She’s deep Comancheria
Even in the Malibu sand
And even when she’s in your arms, she’s still
No man’s land
[Pre Chorus]
So love her like a Mustang
Like a wild thing
Better let her run free
If she wants to love ya
You let her love ya
You give her everything
[Chorus]
The fire in your chest
The very last breath of the boy who’s unravelin’
The man who’s obsessed
With the woman, the girl
The wide open world in your hands
She’s no man’s land
[Verse 2]
She’s purple heather on the high plains
Her heart’s a mystery
You’re lucky if you get a glimpse of
Her rosehips among the weeds
She’s a deep Sedona sunset
Behind the Santa Ana winds
You can hold her for forever, but she’s still
No man’s land
[Pre Chorus]
So love her like a Mustang
Like a wild thing
Better let her run free
If she wants to love ya
You let her love ya
You give her everything
[Chorus]
The fire in your chest
The very last breath of the boy who’s unravelin’
The man who’s obsessed
With the woman, the girl
The wide open world in your hands
She’s no man’s land
[Pre Chorus]
So love her like a Mustang
Like a wild thing
Better let her run free
If she wants to love ya
You let her love ya
You give her everything
[Chorus]
The fire in your chest
The very last breath of the boy who’s unravelin’
The man who’s obsessed
With the woman, the girl
The wide open world in your hands
She’s no man’s land
She’s no man’s land
[Outro]
She might be ninety miles from Pecos
Lightyears from anywhere
Goodbye on her cinnamon breath
And freedom in her hair
I doubt it was a tough decision for her former NY cop husband to embrace living in Lambert’s country superstar world. Did you think she would have embraced living in a brownstone in Queens?🤪
I’d much rather live rich in NY city than on a farm!
Amen!
To be clear, I was talking about Miranda living in the “world” of a former NY cop, not the world of a rich music star in New York. My guess is that the boyfriend’s overall lifestyle is far nicer living in Miranda’s country world (while I’m sure jetting to New York or anywhere else they want to go)
