Song of the Day #5,945: ‘I Hate Love Songs’ – Miranda Lambert

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Miranda Lambert’s new album, Postcards from Texas

#5. ‘I Hate Love Songs’

Miranda Lambert has been married to her current husband longer than she was married to Blake Shelton, and she’s seemingly happier than ever. So I was quite surprised to find her writing at least a couple of songs on this album that explore the breakup of her first marriage.

‘I Hate Love Songs’ is one of them, and while I have no evidence that it’s about Blake Shelton, it’s hard to imagine it being about anyone else. And a song still to come on this list supports the theory.

This song is a sad look at what happens when an all-encompassing love doesn’t work out, and worse, when you blame yourself for the outcome.

If the end of her first marriage indeed led Lambert to hate love songs, that makes sense, because she hasn’t written many of them since. She’s more interested in writing about loss, regret, and redemption, which makes for a much more compelling catalog.

[Verse 1]
Have you ever loved somebody
Like a preacher loves Sundays?
From the deepest part
Of your tattered heart?
Have you ever needed someone
Like you might come undone?
Like you might just die
If they said goodbye?

[Chorus]
I did one time
And it ruined my life
Everything went wrong
Now that he’s gone
I hate love songs
I hate love songs

[Verse 2]
Have you ever hated yourself
For runnin’ right off the rails?
For chasin’ demons?
For no good reason?

[Chorus]
I did one time
And it wrecked my life
Everything went wrong
Now that I’m gone
I hate love songs
I hate love songs
I hate love songs (I hate love songs)
I hate love songs

[Outro]
There’s no evidence
Of how the story ends
Sometimes it’s meant to be
That wasn’t you and me

I think it’s easier to create from angst than contentment, so she may be drawing on this more for artistic benefit than a personal need for catharsis.
