Song of the Day #5,932: ‘First Day of My Life’ – Bright Eyes

Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…

My somewhat back-handed compliment for Bright Eyes’ sixth album, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, is that it’s perfect mixtape fodder. Just about any one of its 10 songs would be a standout track on a lovingly curated compilation.

The catch is that I’m never in the mood to hear all of those songs in a row. After awhile, there’s a sameness in composition and delivery that wears on me.

Bright Eyes is the brainchild of Conor Oberst, a singer-songwriter who has released dozens of albums both as a solo artist and as part of a half-dozen bands. This album might be the best received of all those projects, having shown up near the top of many critics’ year-end lists.

Oberst released a second album simultaneously with this one, the more electronic Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. I never spent much time with that one, the acoustic folk of I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning being far more my style.

And one song at a time, it really works its magic. Oberst sounds a bit like Bob Dylan channelling Elliott Smith (or maybe the other way around), and that’s a winning combination.

Keep it in mind the next time you’re making a playlist.

[Verse 1]
This is the first day of my life
Swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beach
Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am, I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

[Chorus]
And so I thought I’d let you know
Yeah, these things take forever, I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home
Mhm, mhm

[Verse 2]
Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning?
And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed
You felt as if you’d just woke up
And you said, “This is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

[Chorus]
So if you wanna be with me
With these things there’s no telling, we just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery
Aha, mhm
Besides, maybe this time it’s different
I mean, I really think you like me

I’ve never heard of him, his band or this album, but he has a nice sound.
