Throwing back to the week of September 24, 1994, we find Boyz II Men clinging to the top spot with ‘I’ll Make Love to You,’ halfway through its 14-week run at #1.
At #2 was indie pop darling Lisa Loeb with ‘Stay (I Missed You),’ a song buoyed by its inclusion in the Reality Bites soundtrack. Loeb’s tune eventually reached the top spot, making her the first artist to land a #1 while unsigned.
That brings us to #3, where we find a Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey duet of the Lionel Richie/Diana Ross 1981 ballad ‘Endless Love.’ The song was the first, and most successful, single from Vandross’ covers album Songs.
Your opinion of this song probably depends on your opinion of the original because Vandross and Carey deliver a very faithful rendition, and of course they both have lovely voices.
I kinda dig ‘Endless Love,’ corny as it is. And while I like this version just fine, I prefer Richie and Ross. So did the music listening public, I guess, because that one reached #1 while this one peaked at #2.
