Throwing back to the week of September 3, 1994, we find Boyz II Men atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘I’ll Make Love to You.’
Written and produced by Babyface, this track was the biggest hit of 1994, spending a record-tying 14 weeks at #1. It would go on to be the third-highest charting song of the decade, behind only Los Del Rio’s ‘Macarena’ and (quite the flex) Boyz II Men’s collaboration with Mariah Carey, ‘One Sweet Day.’
Boyz II Men also had the sixth most popular song of the 90s with 92’s ‘End of the Road,’ making them the decade’s most popular artist, by this measure at least.
My blind spot for both R&B and boy bands kept Boyz II Men off my radar, so I’m surprised at just how big they were. I know this song pretty well, but I’m not really familiar with the other two.
What’s even wilder than their massive success is how quickly they fell off the radar. After releasing four multi-Platinum albums between 1991 and 1997, their next 11 albums over two decades barely cracked the charts. I guess they were truly a 90s phenomenon.
