Song of the Day #5,883: ‘People’ – Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand kept the music coming once she released her debut in February of 1963. She dropped The Second Barbra Streisand Album in August of that same year, then The Third Album in February of 1964.

These records were similar to her first, featuring her takes on Broadway show tunes. Rather than mining more obscure songs as she did on the debut, her third album found her tackling standards such as ‘It Had to Be You,’ ‘As Time Goes By,’ and ‘Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.’

The albums did well critically and commercially, but it was her fourth album — People — that became her first #1. On this one, Streisand returned to selecting little-known show tines for the tracklist, with one major exception.

The title track is a new recording of a favorite song from Funny Girl, the Broadway show in which Streisand had recently starred as Fanny Brice. This is one of four studio recordings Streisand would release of the song during her career, in addition to eight live renditions.

People earned Streisand her second Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys, and she took home her second Best Vocal Performance award in as many years. In addition to topping the Billboard 200, it became her first Platinum album.

All those accolades aside, I find this album very similar to her first three and therefore a bit underwhelming. She is clearly great at delivering Broadway show tunes, but I’m ready to hear her take things in a new direction.

[Verse 1]
People
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
We’re children
Needing other children
And yet letting a grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children

[Verse 2]
Lovers
Are very special people
They’re the luckiest people in the world
With one person
One very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you were half, now you’re whole
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world

[Verse 2]
With one person
One very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you were half, now you’re whole
No more hunger and thirst
First be a person who needs people
People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
