I owe Hozier an apology. Six years ago, I included him in a series I did on future one-hit wonders. I figured ‘Take Me to Church’ would be the only Top 40 single of his career.
That prediction held up pretty well for five years. His next 15 singles failed to crack the Hot 100. Then he managed to break into the Top 40 with ‘Northern Attitude,’ a collaboration with Noah Kahan. Still not exactly “hit” status.
But, lo and behold, ‘Too Sweet,’ the first track from his new EP Unheard‘ has put him back on top — literally… the song made it all the way to #1.
It currently sits at #7, but its brief stint at #1 makes it his best-performing song (‘Take Me to Church’ peaked at #2). It also makes him the first Irish artist to have a #1 on the Hot 100 since Sinead O’Connor in 1990.
So, I’m sorry to Hozier. At the very least he’ll be a two-hit wonder.
