My kids recently introduced me to one of those projects that makes the internet seem like a good idea. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s bardcore!
This genre finds well-known songs covered in the Renaissance style, with traditional instruments and styling recreating modern melodies. The lyrics, too, get an era-appropriate makeover, with the inclusion of lots of thees and thys.
This week, I’ll feature five bardcore songs by Canadian YouTuber Hildegard Von Blingen’, one of the genre’s top practioners.
Starting things off is ‘House of the Rising Sun,’ a traditional folk song made popular by The Animals in 1964. This is an interesting song to get this treatment because it already feels old-timey, so it’s a nice way to ease into this world.
They call the Rising Sun
It has been the ruin of many a soul
And Lord I know I’m one
Mother was a tailor
She sewed my chaperon
My father was a gambling man
Down, in Orléans
The only thing a gambler requires
Is a satchel and his luck
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s in his cups
Oh mothers tell thy children
Not to do what I have done
I spent my life in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
I’ve one foot in the stirrup
The other on the ground
I shall return to Orléans
To be lost, and never found
There is a house in Orléans
They call the Rising Sun
It has been the ruin of many a soul
And Lord I know I’m one
I’ve never heard of bardcore, but it’s kind of a cool concept.
Very Cool!
