Rock bands, especially ones with a harder edge, have historically had a tough time dominating the singles chart. Perhaps no better example exists than Led Zeppelin.

The English rockers are one of the top-selling bands of all time, with more than 300 millions albums sold worldwide, and more than 110 million in the U.S. Of their eight studio albums, four went Diamond while the rest were merely multi-Platinum. Led Zeppelin IV is one of only 12 albums in history to go double Diamond.

All that record-breaking success, and yet Led Zeppelin has never had a #1 hit on the Hot 100.

Even wilder than that, Led Zeppelin has had only one top ten hit in their career: today’s SOTD, ‘Whole Lotta Love,’ which peaked at #4.

‘Immigrant Song?’ #16. ‘Black Dog?’ #15. ‘Rock and Roll?’ #47. ‘Stairway to Heaven?’ Didn’t even make the chart.

If streaming had been a thing in the early 70s, I have no doubt that Zeppelin and other classic rock bands would have had songs atop the chart. But nobody bought these singles because they were too busy buying and listening to the whole albums. And radio airplay couldn’t make up the difference.

Of course, dozens of songs have hit #1 only to be long forgotten, while I don’t think anybody will be forgetting Led Zeppelin’s greatest work anytime soon.
