One Direction might be a bigger deal in the UK, where their five albums produced four #1 singles, but they made quite a splash in the United States as well. During their four-year run, all of their albums went Platinum or multi-Platinum in the U.S., and they set a record as the first band to have their first four albums debut atop the Billboard 200.
All that success didn’t translate into a #1 hit on the Hot 100, however, despite six top ten hits.
The closest the band came to a chart-topper was ‘Best Song Ever,’ which peaked at #2 for one week in August of 2013. It was kept from the top spot by Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines,’ which enjoyed three straight months at #1.
Other top tens for the boy band included debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ (#4), ‘Live While We’re Young’ (#3), ‘Story of My Life’ (#6), ‘Drag Me Down’ (#3), and ‘Perfect’ (#10).
As solo artists, the One Direction boys have fared a bit better. Though Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson have never reached #1, Zayn Malik has done it once and Harry Styles twice since the band split.
Maybe it’s the way she walked (Ow!)
Straight into my heart and stole it
Through the doors and past the guards (Ow!)
Just like she already owned it
[Pre-Chorus]
I said, “Can you give it back to me?”
She said, “Never in your wildest dreams”
[Chorus]
And we danced all night to the best song ever
We knew every line, now I can’t remember
How it goes, but I know that I won’t forget her
‘Cause we danced all night to the best song ever
[Post-Chorus]
I think it went, “Oh, oh, oh,” I think it went, “Yeah, yeah, yeah”
I think it goes (Woo!)
[Verse 2]
Said her name was Georgia Rose (Ow!)
And her daddy was a dentist
Said I had a dirty mouth (I got a dirty mouth)
But she kissed me like she meant it
[Pre-Chorus]
I said, “Can I take you home with me?”
She said, “Never in your wildest dreams”
[Chorus]
And we danced all night to the best song ever
We knew every line, now I can’t remember (How it goes, but I know)
How it goes, but I know that I won’t forget her
‘Cause we danced all night to the best song ever
[Post-Chorus]
I think it went, “Oh, oh, oh,” I think it went, “Yeah, yeah, yeah”
I think it goes (Woo!)
[Bridge]
You know, I know, you know I’ll remember you
And I know, you know, I know you’ll remember me
And you know, I know, you know I’ll remember you (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)
And I know, you know, I hope you’ll remember how we danced (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)
How we danced (Oh, oh, oh, one, two, one, two, three, ow!)
[Chorus]
How we danced all night to the best song ever (How we danced)
We knew every line, now I can’t remember (We knew every line)
How it goes, but I know that I won’t forget her
‘Cause we danced all night (We danced, we danced) to the best song ever (It goes something like this)
And we danced all night to the best song ever (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)
We knew every line, now I can’t remember (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)
How it goes, but I know that I won’t forget her (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that I won’t forget her)
‘Cause we danced all night to the best song ever (Oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, best song ever)
[Post-Chorus]
I think it went, “Oh, oh, oh,” I think it went, “Yeah, yeah, yeah”
I think it goes (Woo!)
[Outro]
Best song ever
It was the best song ever
It was the best song ever
It was the best song ever
This one does surprise me. Meanwhile, I am far more familiar with their other hits you listed than this SOTD. Maybe the others stuck around on the charts longer?
