Song of the Day #5,843: ‘Long As I Can See the Light’ – Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded for a little less than four years but managed to generate a boatload of hits in that time. They released seven Gold or Platinum albums during that span, and put 11 songs in the Top 20 of Billboard’s Hot 100.

But the classic rock band did not manage to score a #1 hit. Instead, they are the ultimate bridesmaids, with five different singles (and seven songs) hitting #2 — a frustrating record.

First came ‘Proud Mary,’ followed by ‘Bad Moon Rising’ and ‘Green River,’ all in 1969. The 1970 album Cosmo’s Factory produced the other four #2 hits in ‘Travelin’ Band,’ ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain, ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door,’ and ‘Long As I Can See the Light.’ Those four were released as two “double A-side” singles.

Cosmo’s Factory also featured ‘Up Around the Bend’ and ‘Run Through the Jungle,’ which both reached #4.

The band reached the top ten a few other times, including with ‘Down On the Corner’ (#3) and ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain’ (#8).

Do you know the song ‘Dizzy’ by Tommy Roe? I sure don’t. Well, it’s the reason ‘Proud Mary’ isn’t a #1 hit. ‘Bad Moon Rising’ was held from the top spot by Henry Mancini’s ‘Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet.’ Other songs that kept CCR from #1 were The Archies’ ‘Sugar Sugar,’ Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ and Diana Ross’ ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.’

[Verse 1]
Put a candle in the window
But I feel I’ve got to move
Though I’m going, going, I’ll be coming home soon
Long as I can see the light

[Verse 2]
Pack my bag and let’s get movin’
‘Cause I’m bound to drift a while
While I’m gone, gone, you don’t have to worry no
Long as I see the light

[Verse 3]
Guess I’ve got that old travelin’ bone
‘Cause that feelin’ won’t leave me alone
But I won’t, won’t be losin’ my way, no, no
Long as I can see the light
Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh yeah

[Verse 1]
Put a candle in the window
But I feel I’ve got to move
Though I’m going, going, I’ll be coming home soon
Long as I can see the light

[Outro]
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light

I know all of CCR’s other hits you named, but not today’s SOTD. Meanwhile, I’m surprised you aren’t familiar with Tommy Roe’s “Dizzy.” I’m a big Roe fan!

JK. I’ve never heard of him or his number one song either.🤪

An instrumental soundtrack kept Bad Moon Rising from hitting #1? That’s the one that shocks me the most. And your point is excellent… doesn’t really matter what held the spot then, if we only know one of those songs today.
