Song of the Day #5,841: ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)’ – Backstreet Boys

Backstreet Boys are the most successful boy band of all time, having sold more than 100 million albums worldwide since their 1996 debut. They are one of just a few acts in history to have released multiple Diamond albums.

They have received nine Grammy nominations and embarked on several record-breaking world tours.

What Backstreet Boys haven’t done, however, is put a song atop the Billboard Hot 100.

The closest they came was today’s SOTD, the fourth single from their smash debut album. ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)’ peaked at #2 for one week, kept from the top spot by Mariah Carey’s ‘Honey.’

I would have guessed 1999’s ‘I Want It That Way’ was a chart-topper, but that track made it only as high as #6 in the U.S., though it did reach #1 in six other countries.

The band’s other forays into the top ten include ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ (#4), ‘All I Have to Give’ (#5), ‘Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely’ (#6), and ‘Shape of My Heart’ (#9).

The band has steadily released singles in the 24 years since their last top ten hit, and reached the top 20 with a two Christmas songs in 2022.

[Verse 1]
Even in my heart, I see
You’re not being true to me
Deep within my soul, I feel
Nothing’s like it used to be

[Pre-Chorus]
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad, baby

[Chorus]
Quit playing games with my heart
Quit playing games with my heart (With my heart)
Before you tear us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games with my heart
I should have known from the start
You know you have got to stop (From my heart)
You are tearing us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games with my heart

[Verse 2]
I live my life the way
To keep you coming back to me
Everything I do is for you
So what is it that you can’t see

[Pre-Chorus]
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad, baby
You better …

[Chorus]
Quit playing games with my heart
Quit playing games with my heart (With my heart)
Before you tear us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games with my heart
I should have known from the start
You know you have got to stop (From my heart)
You are tearing us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games

[Bridge]
Baby, baby!
The love that we had was so strong
Don’t leave me hanging here forever
Oh baby, baby, this is not right
Let’s stop this tonight

[Interlude]
Baby, oh-oh, quit playing games
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na, baby
Na na na na na na

[Pre-Chorus]
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad, baby

[Chorus]
Quit playing games with my heart
Quit playing games with my heart (With my heart)
Before you tear us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games with my heart
I should have known from the start
You know you have got to stop (From my heart)
You are tearing us apart (My heart)
Quit playing games with my heart

[Outro]
Quit playing games with my heart
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na, baby
Na na na na na na
Quit playing games with my heart
Na na na na na na
With my heart
Na na na na na, baby
My heart, my heart

I too would have assumed “I Want It That Way” would have been a number one song.
