#4 – Shakira – Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran
A couple of weeks ago I declared that I’m not primarily a lyrics guy. Exhibit A would be my enduring affection for the Spanish-language output of Shakira.
I enjoy the Colombian singer-songwriter’s English-language work as well, but it definitely takes a back seat to the great work she has done in her native tongue.
Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is Shakira’s 12th album, and her first in seven years. She has yet to release a bad record, and this one definitely doesn’t endanger that streak. It’s full of the genre-blending, Latin-tinged pop rock she has excelled at for more than 30 years.
Much of the album centers on her split with Spanish football player Gerard Piqué, with whom she had two children before discovering he was cheating on her. My Spanish isn’t good enough to confirm that’s what she’s singing about, but she certainly sounds righteously pissed in a lot of these songs.
Five years ago, I shared a song called ’23’ from Shakira’s self-titled 2014 album. It was a love song written for the very same Gerard Piqué. Funny what a difference a decade can make.

Meet Me In Montauk 
She does have a nice sound, but, though I’m not necessarily a lyrics guy either, I don’t tend to gravitate to songs without English lyrics.
I need to dive in and give this album a proper listen! I did really love the single she put out from it.
