On June 22, 1964, the #1 song in the U.S. was ‘A World Without Love,’ the first single by British duo Peter and Gordon. The song also reached #1 in their native UK.
This song was written by a 16-year-old Paul McCartney, and given to Peter Asher because Paul was dating his sister Jane. Paul apparently didn’t think the track was good enough for The Beatles, but its success for this previously unknown duo suggests it would have likely been another chart-topper for the Fab Four had they opted to record it.
Peter and Gordon went on to have hits with several other McCartney tunes, as well as a cover of Buddy Holly’s ‘True Love Ways.’ They were the remoras of the 60s pop landscape, attaching themselves to bigger fish and feasting on the scraps.
Please lock me away
And don’t allow the day
Here inside
Where I hide
With my loneliness
[Chorus]
I don’t care what they say
I won’t stay in a world without love
[Verse 2]
Birds sing out of tune
And rain clouds hide the moon
I’m okay
Here I’ll stay
With my loneliness
[Chorus]
I don’t care what they say
I won’t stay in a world without love
[Bridge]
So I wait and in a while
I will see my true love smile
She may come, I know not when
When she does, I’ll know, so baby, until then
[Verse 1]
Lock me away
And don’t allow the day
Here inside
Where I hide
With my loneliness
[Chorus]
I don’t care what they say
I won’t stay in a world without love
[Instrumental Break]
[Bridge]
So I wait and in a while
I will see my true love smile
She may come, I know not when
When she does, I’ll know, so baby, until then
[Verse 1]
Lock me away
And don’t allow the day
Here inside
Where I hide
With my loneliness
[Chorus]
I don’t care what they say
I won’t stay in a world without love
I don’t care what they say
I won’t stay in a world without love
Didn’t know you were such a fish aficionado. Had to look up what remoras are.🤪
I was about to look it up too. Thanks Dana for saving me the trouble 😉
