The week The week of June 12, 2004, finds a lot of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100 — songs I’ve either covered during Throwback Weekends or at some other point on the blog.
At #1 is Usher’s ‘Burn,’ followed by ‘I Don’t Wanna Know‘ by Mario Winans. Then comes Beyoncé with ‘Naughty Girl‘ and Usher again with ‘Yeah!‘
That brings us to #5, where alternative rock band Hoobastank sits with their biggest hit, ‘The Reason.’
‘The Reason’ is an effective power ballad about seeking forgiveness and redemption. It spent 38 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaked at #2. Then the band never cracked the chart again. Maybe it’s because their name is Hoobastank.
The song’s video is rather amusing. It’s a sort of low-rent Ocean’s Eleven featuring a thoroughly ill-conceived heist. I have to imagine there was a better way to get a hold of that ruby.
