The week of June 9, 1984, saw Cyndi Lauper atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Time After Time,’ a song I have already featured on the blog.
Falling to #2 after owning the top spot the week before was Deniece Williams’ ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boy’ from the Footloose soundtrack. This was the fourth single from that soundtrack and the second to reach #1, following Kenny Loggins’ title track.
Like that Loggins song, ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boy’ was nominated for Best Song at the Oscars but lost to Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You.’
This was Williams’ second #1 hit, following the 1978 duet with Johnny Mathis, ‘Too Much, Too Little, Too Late.’
Fun fact: Williams and Mathis also teamed up on the tune ‘Without Us,’ which I learned today was a whole song and not just the theme to Family Ties.
My baby, he don’t talk sweet
He ain’t got much to say
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
I know that he loves me anyway
And maybe he don’t dress fine
But I don’t really mind
[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause every time he pulls me near
I just wanna cheer
[Chorus]
Let’s hear it for the boy
Let’s give the boy a hand
Let’s hear it for my baby
You know you gotta understand
Maybe he’s no Romeo
But he’s my loving one-man show
Wooah, wooah, wooah-oh
Let’s hear it for the boy
[Verse 2]
My baby may not be rich
He’s watching every dime
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
We always have a real good time
And maybe he sings off-key
But that’s all right by me, yeah
‘Cause what he does, he does so well
Makes me wanna yell
[Chorus]
Let’s hear it for the boy
Let’s give the boy a hand
Let’s hear it for my baby
You know you gotta understand
Maybe he’s no Romeo
But he’s my loving one-man show
Woah, woah, woah, woah
Let’s hear it for the boy
[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause every time he pulls me near
I just wanna cheer
[Chorus]
Let’s hear it for the boy
Let’s give the boy a hand
Let’s hear it for my baby
You know you gotta understand
Maybe he’s no Romeo
But he’s my loving one-man show
Woah, woah, woah, woah
Let’s hear it for the boy
[Outro]
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
Let’s hear it for my man
(Let’s hear it for my baby)
Let’s hear it for my baby
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
(Let’s hear it for my man)
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
Let’s hear it for my man
(Let’s hear it for my man)
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
(Let’s hear it for my man)
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
Let’s hear it for my boy
(Let’s hear it for my man)
Let’s hear it for my man
(Let’s hear it for the boy)
(Let’s hear it for my man)
Let’s hear it for my man, yeah
Wasn’t a big fan of this song, but would have taken it for the Oscar win over the drivel “I Just Called”
I agree with Dana
