Throwing back to the week of May 21, 1994, we find the R&B band All-4-One atop the Billboard Hot 100 with their sole #1 hit, ‘I Swear.’
This song was first released five months earlier as the lead single of country singer John Michael Montgomery’s album Kickin’ It Up. That recording spent a month at #1 on the country chart, and made it to #42 on the Hot 100.
A record exec heard the potential for an R&B hit and presented the song to All-4-One, a California-based quartet who had just finished recording their debut album. Some of the band members scoffed, doubting that a country hit could translate to their style.
But boy did it ever. All-4-One’s version of ‘I Swear’ ultimately spent 30 weeks on the chart and 11 straight at #1, making if one of the longest-running #1 hits in history. The band also won a Grammy for the recording.
All-4-One released seven more albums, including an obligatory Christmas release, and scored another top five single with ‘I Can Love You Like That.’ I managed to know both of their hits pretty well without ever knowing their name.
