Throwing back to the week of April 10, 1954, we find Perry Como atop the Billboard singles chart with ‘Wanted,’ a song that would spend two months in the #1 spot and become the best-selling track of that year.
‘Wanted’ was the eighth of 11 #1 hits for Como between 1945 and 1958, and he had 36 other top ten releases during that span. I guess he was his era’s Drake.
Lyrically, the song finds Como pining for a woman who done him wrong, eager to take her back if only she’ll want him back.
Someone who kissed me
And held me closely
Then stole my heart
Wanted
Someone I trusted
Who gave no warning
We’d ever part
She was last seen
Hiding out in someone’s arms
He knew nothing
Of the danger in her charms
A jury
May find her guilty
But I’d forgive her
If I could see
A signed confession
That she’s repented
And really wanted
No one but me
Wanted
Someone who kissed me
And held me closely
Then stole my heart
Wanted
Someone I trusted
Who gave no warning
That we’d ever part
She was last seen
Hiding out in someone’s arms
He knew nothing
Of the danger in her charms
A jury
May find her guilty
But I’d forgive her
If I could see
A signed confession
That she’s repented
And really wanted
No one but me
The 50s are really a fascinating decade musically – transitioning from the Big Band era of the 40s to the rock and roll era of the 60s.
my parents loved Perry Como. My stepfather was thrilled that Perry Como had been a barber like him before he became a successful singer. We listened to all his recordings and I remember this song. I was more into Elvis and Johnny Mathis those early years.
