Song of the Day #5,709: ‘Warning Signs’ – Derek Ted

Continuing my countdown of last year’s best films…

Best Films of 2023
#16. You Hurt My Feelings

Before this one, I had somehow never seen a film by writer/director Nicole Holofcener, a blindspot I’ve been meaning to remedy through a deep dive of her filmography.

Well, this was a great start. A hilarious and smart movie about the white lies we tell the people we love, You Hurt My Feelings is buoyed by a wonderful lead performance by Julia Louis Dreyfus.

Tobias Menzies is also quite good as her therapist husband, though the movie might just be stolen by real-life spouses David Cross and Amber Tamblyn as a feuding couple who want their money back because his counseling hasn’t helped.

#15. The Killer

It’s crazy that David Fincher, a director with a string of high-quality, high-grossing adult dramas under his belt, is now releasing movies on Netflix, where they are promptly forgotten.

That’s not a tragedy in the case of 2020’s disappointing Mank, but last year’s The Killer deserves much better. This is a pitch-black comedy about an assassin who approaches his work with a pathological detachment, until he botches a hit and spends the rest of the movie breaking the rules he insists he’s still following.

Soundtracked by Michael Fassbender’s deadpan narration and the slew of Smiths songs his character plays while working, this film is as fun a listen as it is a watch.

Waiting for idols to fall
For  someone 2 take the blame
These  actions call
For some response
Don’t ignore
The  warning signs
Don’t  ignore
The warning signs

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I very much liked You Hurt My Feelings.

Haven’t seen The Killers, but only you and your daughters would put “fun” and the Smiths in the same sentence.😉

  2. Amy says:

You’ve never seen Enough Said?! How is that possible? I love every Holofcener film I’ve seen (which I think is all of them), but Enough Said… oh my… my favorite by a mile! And it features James Gandolfini’s sublime final performance!

when is that deep dive coming?

At the start of the year, I was hoping You Hurt My Feelings would get Julia all the awards recognition she should have received for Enough Said. It’s one of my top 10 films of the year but still doesn’t hold a candle to Enough Said.

Enough said? You gonna see it now?

  3. Peg says:

I started You hurt my feelings but didn’t finish because Dad wasn’t into it and I figured I would catch up with it later but then I forgot. Need to try again.
The Killer on the other hand we both watched and I really liked it a lot. Fassbender was so good in this and having just watched Amy’s recommendation ,Next Goal Wins, I realize he has an amazing talent. It’s the first time I’ve seen him in a comedy/drama and he was wonderful.
