Song of the Day #5,694: ‘Tom Sawyer (Live)’ – Rush

A few of my ‘musical movie moments’ picks this week come from films with more than one potential selection. Writer-director Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw offered up two strong candidates.

The first comes when Mike Von Erich (Stanley Simmons), the youngest of four brothers in a family of professional wrestlers, plays a local gig with his band. Mike’s parents don’t support his musical aspirations, so his brothers help him sneak out of the house to make it to the party.

Once there, Mike performs the song ‘Live That Way Forever,’ written for the film by Richard Reed Parry (who also scored the film) and his wife, Laurel Sprengelmeyer. His brothers cheer him on, demonstrating the fraternal bond that will be fractured by the film’s tragic turn.

That’s a great moment, but I’m going with a more traditional pick today: a good old-fashioned sports movie montage. This sequence, set to Rush’s ‘Tom Sawyer,’ finds the brothers training, competing, succeeding, but also succumbing to substance abuse and the pressure to excel.

‘Tom Sawyer’ was used by Kerry Von Erich as entrance music during one stretch of his career, so it has a real-world tie-in as well as being a kick-ass piece of music accompanying some kick-ass footage.

Unfortunately, this whole clip doesn’t currently live online. The best I could find is this video that features the beginning of the montage before segueing to the film’s trailer. You’ll have to see the movie to catch the rest (and I highly recommend you do).

[Intro]
A modern-day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride

[Verse 1]
Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
The river

[Chorus]
What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist
Catch the myth
Catch the mystery
Catch the drift

[Bridge]
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide
Today’s Tom Sawyer, he gets high on you
And the space he invades, he gets by on you

[Instrumental]

[Verse 2]
No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren’t permanent
But change is

[Chorus]
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness
Catch the wit
Catch the spirit
Catch the spit

[Refrain]
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

[Outro]
Exit the warrior
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to
The friction of the day

  1. Dana Gallup says:

While I’m not a big fan of this song or Rush in general, it was used well in this movie.

  2. Amy says:

I also loved the brothers dancing at the wedding, so I might select that moment.
