Song of the Day #5,656: ‘Oh! My Pa-Pa’ – Eddie Fisher

I’ve been very happy with Throwback Weekends, with one exception. As I mentioned last week, the 2010s have been a pain, primarily because I was blogging during that decade so I’ve already featured many of the hits of the day.

To address that issue, I’m changing things up a bit starting this weekend. I will now start my Throwback rotation in the 50s and end in the 00s. But wait, you might say, the Billboard Hot 100 didn’t start publishing until 1958! And you would be right. But Billboard did release a singles chart through out the 50s that gathered the “Best Selling Popular Retail Records” each week. So that’s what I’ll be using to cover 1953 and beyond.

The song atop that chart the week of December 26, 1953, was Eddie Fisher’s ‘Oh! Pa-Pa,’ one of four #1 hits the singer/actor released in the early 50s.

This was an English version of a German tune called ‘O mein Papa,’ written in 1939 and later used in a stage musical and film in the 50s.

Now isn’t this better than whatever Imagine Dragons song was at #15 on the Hot 100 in 2013?

Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood

Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he’d change my tears to laughter

Oh, my pa-pa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown, so funny in his ways
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today

Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he’d change my tears to laughter

Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today
Oh, my pa-pa
Oh, my pa-pa

Yes, I think that’s a good change. Love the exploration of music history, though I can’t say I love today’s song.🤪

Boy I remembered this being played in our house when I was a youngster. My parents were fans of Eddie Fisher and loved this song. Me not so much

Love your switch to ’50s songs rather than the 2010’s. WAY more interesting!
