Scottish rock band Simple Minds released their seventh studio album, Once Upon a Time, on the heels of their breakout hit, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me).’ That track was the band’s first to chart in the U.S. and it made it all the way to #1, an ironic achievement given that they had little interest in recording the song in the first place.
The band chose to leave the hit song (which was released on the soundtrack of The Breakfast Club) off of their next album, but the anthemic pop sound of the tune was present throughout this great collection.
Once Upon a Time featured three hits in ‘Alive and Kicking,’ ‘Sanctify Yourself,’ and ‘All the Things She Said’ — all terrific — but the whole album has a sweep and swagger that makes it a joy from start to finish.
I was struck by how much this album reminds me of U2, particularly frontman Jim Kerr’s vocals, and wasn’t surprised to learn that the band was sometimes cheekily referred to as U3 in the UK. But it turns out the relationship is more complicated than that moniker suggests — U2 actually took more inspiration from Simple Minds than the other way around. The Irish rockers were just the first to achieve international stardom.
Indeed, this was Simple Minds’ only album to make a splash in the U.S., while they had a host of successful releases back home. That fact has me eager to dig into the rest of their catalog. I don’t know if a Simple Minds deep dive is on anybody’s short list, but I’m adding it to mine.
You turn me on, you lift me up
And like the sweetest cup, I’d share with you
You lift me up, don’t you ever stop, I’m here with you
Now it’s all or nothing
‘Cause you said you’ll follow through
You follow me, and I,-I-I follow you
[Pre-Chorus]
What you gonna do when things go wrong?
What you gonna do when it all cracks up?
What you gonna do when the love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What’s it gonna take to make a dream survive?
Who’s got the touch to calm the storm inside?
Who’s gonna save you?
[Chorus]
Alive and kicking
Stay until your love is alive and kicking
Stay until your love is, until your love is alive
[Verse 2]
Oh, you lift me up to the crucial top, so I can see
Oh, you lead me on till the feelings come
And the lights that shine on
But if that don’t mean nothing
Like if someday it should fall through
You’ll take me home where the magic’s from
And I’ll be with you
[Pre-Chorus]
What you gonna do when things go wrong?
What you gonna do when it all cracks up?
What you gonna do when the Love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What’s it gonna take to make a dream survive?
Who’s got the touch to calm the storm inside?
Don’t say goodbye, don’t say goodbye
In the final seconds who’s gonna save you?
[Chorus]
Oh, alive and kicking
Stay until your love is, love is, alive and kicking
Oh, alive and kicking
Stay until your love is, love is, alive and kicking
Yet another album I adored that I played a lot in college. I think I may have owned and heard their follow up album to this one, but then lost track of the band. I wouldn’t mind a deep dive.
