This week I’m going to feature some new releases that have crossed my radar over the past several weeks while I was busy diving into the catalog of The Rolling Stones.
I’m very excited to kick things off with a song by an exciting young artist who happens to be my nephew.
Almost exactly five years ago, I dedicated a week to the Daniel Gallup EP, a collection of songs by then-17-year-old Daniel Gallup. Now that young man is a college graduate with an acoustic album under his belt and a new EP on the way.
This time around, he has partnered with the talented Mack Tracy (drums) and Lucas Kohen (lead guitar, keyboards, production) to deliver his most sophisticated and catchy songs yet. Daniel sings, plays bass and keyboards, and he wrote the music and lyrics (he’s a great acoustic and electric guitarist as well, but I guess he didn’t want to show off too much on this release!).
I’m featuring the first single from the EP today, and I’ll offer up the second later this week.
‘Unbridled and True’ is, as the kids say, a vibe. It’s a wistful ode to uncertainty, a yearning anthem for a generation faced with a world that feels like it’s running on fumes.
“Do I let myself trust?” “Should I just give up?” “I don’t want to intellectualize.” “I’m just trying not to feel.” “Not trying to pick a side.” These lyrics capture the internal conversation of countless young adults (not to mention old ones) looking for meaning and purpose when those things are in short supply.
Daniel has done a beautiful job capturing that struggle and setting it to music that makes it go down easy.
[Note: The visualizer below was shot and edited by Daniel’s sister (and my niece) Madison Gallup, another talented artist worthy of your attention.]
That four letter refrain
A force I’ve tried to game
Not a true believer
Sonnets seeped in shame
Misbegotten claims
Sparks to burned up flames
Too overeager
But I’ll entertain
The careening of this plane
Fly then fall again
Cool, calm demeanor
I don’t want to intellectualize
Not trying to pick a side
I’m just trying not to feel
If the ceiling brings me solace in the night
Can’t seem to pick a side
Does that mean that this is real?
Do I let myself trust?
A heart shrouded in dust
That too often feeds on lust
Just to hold something
Maybe I’m on the cusp
Of true, unbridled love
Should I just give up?
Didn’t see this coming
I’m sick and tired of clinging to this guise (yeah)
I feign comfort and conceal
If the warmth of this incoming sunrise
Is best described
By the moments that I steal
With you
Then it’s due
Time that I play through
I’m terrified it’s rarefied
Unbridled and true
I’m terrified it’s rarefied
Unbridled and true
I am beyond proud of the talent on display here by both my kids, and I’m excited to have a wider audience hear this song as well as the rest of the new EP.
Thank you for shining a light on Daniel’s music!
This is such an amazing start to my week. Thank you for showcasing the talents of our grandchildren Daniel and Madison. Just love this new music that Daniel has written and performed.
Honored to be back featured on my favorite music blog! It’s so rewarding to have my music analyzed by, perhaps, my most trusted source when it comes to these kind of things. I will refrain from peeling back the curtain too much, but will say you shed the light pretty expertly on this one and your interpretation is quite acute. Thank you for taking the time to listen and offer your thoughts! I’m eager to hear what other new music you’ll be pouring over this week!
