Song of the Day #5,579: ‘Making Love Out of Nothing At All’ – Air Supply

Throwing back to the week of October 8, 1983, we discover what a glorious time that was to be alive.

In the #1 spot on that week’s Billboard Hot 100, you have Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ (already covered on the blog), in the middle of a four-week stint at the top spot. At #2 is today’s SOTD, Air Supply’s ‘Making Love Out of Nothing At All,’ which I’ll get to in a moment.

Rounding out the top five are The Police, with ‘King of Pain,’ Spandau Ballet with ‘True,’ and Stray Cats with ‘(She’s) Sexy & 17,’ making for one hell of a varied and enjoyable playlist.

‘Making Love Out of Nothing At All’ spent three weeks at #2 but was kept from the top spot by Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse.’ Coincidentally, both songs were written by the same man, Jim Steinman, who was also responsible for Meat Loaf’s ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ and Celine Dion’s ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.’ Steinman sure had a knack for cheesy pop ballads.

This was Air Supply’s second highest-ranking single, and part of a trio of “love” songs that reached the top two spots of the Hot 100. First came ‘All Out of Love,’ which also hit #2, then ‘The One That You Love,’ the duo’s only #1 hit, before this song marked their last appearance in the top ten.

Bonnie Tyler recorded her own epic version of ‘Making Love Out of Nothing At All’ more than a decade later. It failed to chart in the States.

[Verse 1]
I know just how to whisper
And I know just how to cry
I know just where to find the answers
And I know just how to lie
I know just how to fake it
And I know just how to scheme
I know just when to face the truth
And then I know just when to dream[Verse 2]
And I know just where to touch you
And I know just what to prove
I know when to pull you closer
And I know when to let you loose
And I know the night is fading
And I know the time’s gonna fly
And I’m never gonna tell you everything I gotta tell you
But I know I gotta give it a try

[Verse 3]
And I know the roads to riches
And I know the ways to fame
I know all the rules and then I know how to break ’em
And I always know the name of the game
But I don’t know how to leave you
And I’ll never let you fall
And I don’t know how you do it
Making love out of nothing at all

[Chorus]
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love)
Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all

[Verse 4]
Every time I see you all the rays of the sun are all
Streaming through the waves in your hair
And every star in the sky is taking aim at your eyes
Like a spotlight
The beating of my heart is a drum and it’s lost
And it’s looking for a rhythm like you
You can take the darkness from the pit of the night
And turn it to a beacon burning endlessly bright
I’ve gotta follow it cause everything I know
Well it’s nothing ’til I give it to you

[Interlude]

[Verse 5]
I can make the runner stumble
I can make the final block
And I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle
I can make all the stadiums rock
I can make tonight forever
Or I can make it disappear by the dawn
And I can make you every promise that has ever been made
And I can make all your demons be gone

[Verse 6]
But I’m never gonna make it without you
Do you really wanna see me crawl
And I’m never gonna make it like you do
Making love out of nothing at all

[Chorus]
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love, love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love, love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love, love, love)

Hard to get much cheesier than this song and Air Supply in general!
