Song of the Day #5,572: ‘Blue Velvet’ – Bobby Vinton

Throwing back to the week of October 7, 1963, we find Bobby Vinton in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 with his recording of ‘Blue Velvet.’

This classic song was written in 1950 by Bernie Wayne and was first recorded by Tony Bennett a year later. Bennett’s version reached #16 on the chart that pre-dated the Hot 100 (charmingly named “Records Most Played by Disc Jockeys”). The song was covered by The Clovers and The Statues, among others, in subsequent years.

But it was lounge singer and teen idol Bobby Vinton who would take the song to #1, with his dreamy version becoming the one best remembered today. It was apparently the favorite song of a young David Lynch, who would go on to write and direct the 1986 cult classic film of the same name.

[Intro]
Blue velvet, woah-woah

[Verse 1]
She wore blue velvet (Woah-woah)
Bluer than velvet was the night (Woah-woah-woah)
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars

[Verse 2]
She wore blue velvet (Woah-woah)
Bluer than velvet were her eyes (Woah-woah-woah)
Warmer than May, her tender sighs
Love was ours

[Bridge]
Ours, a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left gone was the glow of

[Verse 3]
Blue velvet (Woah-woah)
But in my heart there’ll always be (Woah-woah-woah)
Precious and warm a memory
Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears

[Verse 4]
She wore blue velvet (Woah-woah)
But in my heart there’ll always be (Woah-woah-woah)
Precious and warm a memory
Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears

[Outro]
Blue velvet, ooh

Hard to believe this song goes back to the year I graduated from high school. I was never a fan either but found it interesting that David Lynch was so inspired
