Throwing back to the week of August 3, 1963, we find the R&B vocal group The Tymes in the #1 spot of the Billboard Hot 100 with their song ‘So Much in Love.’ This doo-wop treasure spent exactly one week at #1.
‘So Much in Love’ was The Tymes’ debut single. Their follow-up release, ‘Wonderful! Wonderful!,’ made it to #7 but they never reached the top ten in the U.S. again. It was a different story in the UK, where they went relatively unnoticed through the 60s but scored a #1 hit in 1975 with ‘Ms Grace.’
Invariably, the 1960s installments of Throwback Weekends are my favorites. These songs, which were considered “oldies” when I was growing up, have such a classic sound and feel. I don’t know what “oldies” means to people born in the 21st century, but for me it will always describe songs like this.
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two, that we don’t know what to do
So in love (so in love) in a world all our own (so in love)
As we stroll by the sea together
Under stars twinkling high above
So in love are we two, no one else but me and you
So in love (so in love), so much in love (so in love)
So in love (so in love), so much in love (so in love)
We stroll along together
I tell you I need you oh so much
I love, love you my darling
Can you tell it in my touch?
When we walk down the aisle together
We will vow to be together till we die
So much love have we two, just can’t wait to say “I do”
So in love (so in love) are you and I (you and I)
So in love (so in love) are you and I (you and I)
So in love (so in love) are you and I (you and I)
I’ve never heard this song or of the Tymes for that matter. Curious whether those who were alive in 1963 remember this song.
I graduated from high school in 1963 and had met my true love as we “strolled bythe sea” ocean in our case. So yes I remember this song ❤️
Timothy B. Schmidt does a brilliant cover of this tune … it can be found on the “Fast Times at Ridgemount High”. He sings all parts on this track …
