The British New Wave duo Eurythmics has been eligible for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inclusion since 2007, and were nominated once before in 2018 before making the cut in 2022.
Lead singer Annie Lennox and multi-instrumentalist/producer Dave Stewart co-wrote and recorded a string of innovative hits and released eight studio albums over a decade. They were truly an 80s band, debuting in 1981 and calling it quits in 1989 (they reunited ten years later for one more album).
Their sound blended New Wave, dance, and art pop, and their singles sounded like nothing else on the radio (or MTV) at the time. Lennox’s powerful vocals and striking androgynous appearance made her an iconic figure of the era.
The band released ten top 40 hits in the U.S., including three that made the top five (‘Sweet Dreams are Made of This’ reached #1). They were even bigger in their native UK, putting 24 songs in the top 40. Interestingly, ‘Sweet Dreams’ peaked at #2 in the UK, though they did score a #1 hit there with ‘There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart).’
Lennox went on to have a successful solo career, and has been eligible for Rock Hall inclusion as a soloist since 2018. But I’m glad to see her make it in alongside Stewart, whose production and instrumental work had as much to do with Eurythmics’ success as the vocals.
Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
Want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?
[Chorus]
So, baby, talk to me
Like lovers do
Walk with me
Like lovers do
Talk to me
Like lovers do
[Verse 2]
Here comes the rain again
Raining in my head like a tragedy
Tearing me apart like a new emotion (Ooh)
I want to breathe in the open wind
I want to kiss like lovers do
Want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?
[Chorus]
So, baby, talk to me
Like lovers do
Walk with me
Like lovers do
Talk to me (Ooh)
Like lovers do
[Synth Solo]
[Refrain]
So, baby, talk to me
Like lovers do
[Bridge]
Ooh
Ooh, yeah
Here it comes again
Ooh
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
[Verse 3]
Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion (Here it comes again, here it comes again, ah)
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
Want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you? (Ooh, here it comes again)
[Verse 4]
Here comes the rain again (I said)
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion (Ooh, ooh, yeah)
I want to walk in the open wind (Mhm)
I want to talk like lovers do
Want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?
[Outro]
Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
The Eurythmics had multigenerational appeal, at least in my household, as they were a favorite of my mother.
They definitely belong in the Rock Hall! One of my favorites ❤️
