Song of the Day #5,492: ‘Ordinary World’ – Duran Duran

Seven performers were inducted into the 2022 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Alphabetically, the first of them was 80s New Wave sensation Duran Duran.

The English quintet was the best-selling band from the “Second British Invasion,” which found synth-driven pop acts delivering songs that would come to define the sound of 80s music. That sound was derided by many critics at the time, but has come to be much appreciated (and copied) in recent decades. They have been eligible for the Rock Hall since 2007 but went un-nominated until last year.

Duran Duran has been nominated for only two Grammys (both for their innovative work in music videos) but have sold more than 100 million records, underlining the divide between their critical and commercial popularity. They have had 14 top ten hits in the UK and 11 in the United States. ‘The Reflex’ reached #1 on both charts.

A list of some of those hits serves as both a trip down memory lane and a reminder that these guys were excellent pop songwriters: ‘Girls On Film,’ ‘Hungry Like the Wolf,’ ‘Save a Prayer,’ ‘Rio,’ ‘Is There Something I Should Know?,’ ‘Union of the Snake,’ ‘A View to a Kill,’ ‘Notorious,’ ‘Ordinary World,’ and ‘Come Undone.’

Given their talent and success, and the ground they broke in pop music history as trendsetters both musically and visually, I’m all for Duran Duran’s inclusion in the Rock Hall.

[Verse 1]
Came in from a rainy Thursday
On the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV
And the radio
Still I can’t escape the ghost of you

[Pre-Chorus]
What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some’d say
Where is the life that I recognise?
Gone away

[Chorus]
But I won’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

[Verse 2]
Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
“Pride will tear us both apart”
Well now pride’s gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

[Pre-Chorus]
What is happening to me?
Crazy, some’d say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

[Chorus]
But I won’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

[Bridge]
Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here beside the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

(Just blown away)

[Chorus]
And I don’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

[Outro]
Every world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
Every world
Is my world

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I was a big fan of “Rio” back in the day, and I liked a few of Duran Duran’s other songs, while being annoyed by others. I guess for me a little Euro-pop goes a long way.

That said, I don’t begrudge the band’s induction into the Rock Hall.
