Song of the Day #5,483: ‘Hounds of Love’ – Kate Bush

It’s been awhile since I last wrote about a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class — the class of 2013 in February, to be exact. My plan with the Hall of Fame series is to cover all of the inductee classes back to the first one in 1983.

Before I move on to the class of 2012, however, I need to acknowledge the newest Rock Hall inductees from 2022 and 2023. Over the next three weeks, I’ll feature the most recent 14 artists inducted into the Hall in the Performers category.

Starting alphabetically with the 2023 class, we kick things off with English art pop singer-songwriter Kate Bush. Bush has been eligible for the Hall since 2004 and was first nominated in 2018. She was nominated three more times in ’21, ’22, and ’23 before finally making the cut.

It seems likely Bush was aided by the profile boost she received from her classic ‘Running Up That Hill’ being included in Season Four of Stranger Things. The song made it to #3 on the Hot 100 nearly 40 years after its initial release, giving Bush the biggest hit of her career.

Given her eclectic style, Bush has been more commercially successful than I would have guessed, especially in the UK. Almost every one of her releases has gone gold or platinum in multiple countries. Even absent that level of popularity, she is worthy of Hall of Fame inclusion for the influence she has had on a laundry list of performers. Those include obvious ones like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Bjork, and Annie Lennox, as well as artists such as Prince, Metallica, and The Weeknd.

While I’ve never really gotten into Bush’s music, I do find the Hounds of Love album excellent from start to finish. That record alone should put her in the Hall of Fame.

[Intro]
”It’s in the trees—It’s coming!”

[Verse 1]
When I was a child, running in the night
Afraid of what might be
Hiding in the dark, hiding in the street
And of what was following me

[Pre Chorus 1]
(Do-do, do-do, do, do)
Now hounds of love are hunting
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
I’ve always been a coward
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
And I don’t know what’s good for me

[Chorus 1]
Oh, here I go
It’s coming for me through the trees
Oh, help me, someone, help me, please
Take my shoes off and throw them in the lake
And I’ll be
Two steps on the water

[Verse 2]
I found a fox, caught by dogs
He let me take him in my hands
His little heart, it beat so fast
And I’m ashamed of running away
From nothing real, I just can’t deal with this
I’m still afraid to be there

[Pre Chorus 2]
(Do, do-do, do, do)
Among your hounds of love
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
I feel your arms surround me
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
I’ve always been a coward
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh)
And never know what’s good for me

[Chorus 2]
Oh, here I go, don’t let me go
Hold me down
It’s coming for me through the trees
Oh, help me, darling, help me, please
Take my shoes off and throw them in the lake
And I’ll be two steps on the water
(Do, do-do, do, do)

[Outro]
I don’t know what’s good for me
I don’t know what’s good for me
I need love, love, love, love, love, yeah
Yeah-yo, Yeah-yo, your love
(Do-do, do)
Take your shoes off and throw them in the lake
Do you know what I really need?
Do you know what I really need?
I need love, love, love, love, love, yeah

Bush’s music is a bit too out there for my personal taste, but I can understand and appreciate how her unique style and influence merited inclusion in the Rock Hall.

I will call out, however, her lovely duet with Peter Gabriel on “Don’t Give Up.”

I agree that the entire HOUNDS OF LOVE album is great — brilliant and wise and loving and beautiful and haunting… Thanks for featuring her today!
