Song of the Day #5,469: ‘Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)’ – Domenico Modugno

On Saturday, I mentioned that only nine songs in languages other than English have topped Billboard’s Hot 100. This week I’ll reveal those titles in chronological order.

The first song to pull off the feat was 1958’s ‘Nel blu, dipinto di blu’ (popularly known as ‘Volare’), a ballad co-written and performed by Italian performer Domenico Modugno. Not only was this the first non-English #1 in Hot 100 history, it was just the second #1 on the Hot 100, period, as the chart had debuted just two weeks prior. So for a very brief time, 50% of all Hot 100 chart-toppers were in Italian.

‘Volare’ also made history at the first-ever Grammy awards in 1959, winning both Record and Song of the Year. Talk about a well-timed single.

The song was selected as the Italian entry for that year’s Eurovision contest, where it finished third behind two songs nobody has ever heard of. Almost fifty years later, it was voted the second-best loved Eurovision entry in the contest’s history, behind ABBA’s ‘Waterloo.’

Modugno wrote and released several other successful songs, though none with the international appeal of this one. He also appeared in more than 40 movies. He died in 1994, at just 66 years old, of a heart attack.

[Strofa 1]

[Ritornello]
Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Nel blu dipinto di blu
Felice di stare lassù

[Strofa 3]
Ma tutti i sogni nell’alba svaniscon perché
Quando tramonta la luna li porta con sé
Ma io continuo a sognare negli occhi tuoi belli
Che sono blu come un cielo trapunto di stelle

[Ritornello]
Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu
Felice di stare quaggiù

[Strofa 4]
E continuo a volare felice
Più in alto del sole ed ancora più su
Mentre il mondo pian piano scompare negli occhi tuoi blu
La tua voce è una musica dolce che suona per me

[Ritornello]
Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu
Felice di stare quaggiù
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu
Felice di stare quaggiù… con te

I’m not sure what is more surprising to me – that the hot 100 in the US didn’t start earlier than 1958 or that the Eurovision contest didn’t start much later.

    • Russ Paris says:

There were other charts prior to the Hot 100’s kickoff in 1958. Various charts tracking music sales and sheet music sales before that go back to the 1890s. Hit Parade started in 1934. Juke Box charts date back to 1938. Billboard started a “Best Sellers” chart in July 1940 and a “most played by DJs chart” in 1945.
