Song of the Day #5,447: ‘My Love’ – Paul McCartney and Wings

Throwing back to the week of June 2, 1973, we find Paul McCartney and Wings at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with their song ‘My Love.’ The track would spend four weeks at #1 and 18 weeks in total on the chart. This was the first of six #1 tracks McCartney recorded with Wings.

This song sounds like it took McCartney about ten minutes to write, and not in the “genius strikes” sort of way. It’s a simple love ballad with an uninspired melody and pedestrian lyrics.

I guess in 1973 that was enough to satisfy McCartney fans who were probably still stinging from the breakup of The Beatles. And it was enough to make a hit out of the second Wings album, Red Rose Speedway.

While I lean toward the opinion that McCartney was the best Beatle, I’m generally uninspired by his post-1970 output. John Lennon had a better solo run, and I’d love to know how his music would have evolved had his life not been tragically cut short. But neither of them was ever as good apart as they were together.

[Verse 1]
And when I go away
I know my heart can stay with my love
It’s understood, it’s in the hands of my love
And my love does it good

[Chorus]
Wo, wo-wo, wo
Wo, wo-wo, wo
My love does it good

[Verse 2]
And when the cupboard’s bare
I’ll still find something there with my love
It’s understood, it’s everywhere with my love
And my love does it good

[Chorus]
Wo, wo-wo, wo
Wo, wo-wo, wo
My love does it good

[Bridge]
Oh oh, I love, oh oh, my love
Only my love holds the other key to me
Oh oh, my love, oh oh, my love
Only my love does it good to me

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
Wo, wo-wo, wo
Wo, wo-wo, wo
My love does it good

[Verse 3]
Don’t ever ask me why
I never say goodbye to my love
It’s understood, it’s everywhere with my love
And my love does it good, woah

[Chorus]
Wo, wo-wo, wo
Wo, wo-wo, wo
My love does it good

[Outro]
Oh oh, I love, oh oh, my love
Only my love does it good to me
Wo, wo, wo, wo
Wo oh, wo oh, wo

I agree that much of Paul’s solo work was uninspiring, but still enjoyable.
