Song of the Day #5,158: ‘A Little More Love’ – Olivia Newton-John

Riding high on the success of Grease, Olivia Newton-John released her most successful album to date later in 1978. Totally Hot featured the formally wholesome chanteuse clad in leather, mirroring the transformation her Sandy made in Grease.

I remember perusing this album cover among my sister’s vinyl collection, intrigued by how grown-up and dangerous Newton-John looked (this must have been years later, given that I was just six when it came out).

Totally Hot was the fourth Newton-John album in five years to crack the top 10 of the Billboard albums chart. She really was a force in the mid to late 70s.

Singles ‘A Little More Love’ and ‘Deeper Than the Night’ were both hits, with the latter one of the only successful songs by Newton-John not written by John Farrar.

Farrar did write ‘A Little More Love,’ another of my favorites. Fitting the tone set by the seductive album cover, this is a song about a woman caught up in an unhealthy sexual relationship.

Night is dragging her feet
I wait alone in the heat
I know, know that you’ll have your way
‘Til you have to go home
No’s a word I can’t say

Cause it gets me nowhere to tell you no
And it gets me nowhere to make you go

Will a little more love make you stop depending?
Will a little more love bring a happy ending?
Will a little more love make it right?
Will a little more love make it right?

Where, where did my innocence go?
How, how was a young girl to know?
I’m trapped, trapped in the spell of your eyes
In the warmth of your arms, in the web of your lies

But it gets me nowhere to tell you no
And it gets me nowhere to make you go

Will a little more love make you stop depending?
Will a little more love bring a happy ending?
Will a little more love make it right?
Will a little more love make it right?

Gets me nowhere to tell you no
It gets me nowhere to make you go

Will a little more love make you stop depending?
Will a little more love bring a happy ending?
Will a little more love make it right?
Will a little more love make it right?

Gets me nowhere to tell you no
It gets me nowhere to make you go

Will a little more love make you stop depending?
Will a little more love bring a happy ending?
Will a little more love make it right?
Will a little more love make it right?

Gets me nowhere to tell you no
It gets me nowhere to make you go

I’m not familiar with “Deeper than the Night,” but certainly am with today’s SOTD. Guess I never had the album to hear the former song, or to stare at the album cover.😝

I’ve always wondered about the lyric, “will a little more love make you stop depending”. Could it be about being in a relationship with someone who’s deep in substance abuse?
