In contrast to yesterday’s track, sung by a 13-year-old Brenda Lee, today’s Christmas song was recorded by Burl Ives when he was pushing 60.
This week’s #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 is best remembered as a song from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas special. Ives voiced the narrator, Sam the Snowman.
The special, which I loved as a kid, hasn’t aged particularly well. Somehow I never noticed or cared that the reindeer, and even Santa, bully poor Rudolph until he proves useful to them, and only then do they love him.
Good songs, though.
Have a holly jolly Christmas
It’s the best time of the year
I don’t know if there’ll be snow
But have a cup of cheer
[Verse 2]
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet
[Hook]
Oh, the mistletoe hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you, kiss her once for me
[Verse 3]
Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn’t hear
Oh, by golly have a holly jolly Christmas this year!
Lol. I would have to watch again, but my recollection is that it was really the reindeers doing the bullying more than Santa, though Santa was more like the enabler.
I really hate a bully!
