I don’t know anything about Father John Misty other than he’s apparently a major asshole. I’ve read snarky interviews where he trashes other musicians and accounts of other musicians trashing him.
He once announced that he would cover Ryan Adams’ 1989, which is a song-by-song cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989, to “match one grotesque stunt with another.” Adams, in turn, bashed Father John Misty on Twitter, calling him “the most self-important Asshole on earth” and, amusingly, “Sir Fuckhead.” Adams later apologized, saying he was having a bad day.
Misty, whose real name is Josh Tillman, has been recording for more than a decade, under his given name, his stage name and as a part of various bands, including Fleet Foxes.
His latest album, God’s Favorite Customer, is the first music of his I’ve heard and, all the extra-curricular stuff aside, I really like it.
Ironically, it reminds me a lot of Ryan Adams’ best work: lush, moody and introspective, with thought-provoking lyrics and subtle melodies.
I can’t vouch for the guy as a human being, but based on this album, he’s my kind of musician.
Another night on the straits
All bug-eyed and babbling
Out on the corner of 7th and A
I’m in the business of living
Yeah, that’s something I’d say
All I need is a new friend
I’m only five blocks away
[Chorus]
Speak to me
Won’t you speak, sweet angel?
Don’t you remember me?
I was God’s favorite customer
[Verse 2]
Beware the man who has everything
Everything that he wants
You can spot him from a mile away
In his gold chain and only one pair of socks
I’m out here testing the maxim
That all good things have to stop
The bar closes at 5
But the big man is just opening shop
[Chorus]
Speak to me (oh, speak to me)
Won’t you speak, sweet angel?
Don’t you remember me? (Don’t you remember me?)
I was God’s favorite customer
But now I’m in trouble
[Outro]
Speak to me (oh, speak to me)
Won’t you speak, sweet angel?
I need some company (I need some company)
I swear, just one more night longer
Sir Fuckhead probably was half way through recording his take on Swift’s 1989 when he found out Adams had beat him to the punch.😁
