This week and next, I’m counting down the songs I most associate with movies — tracks that immediately put me into a specific scene of a favorite film.
Most of these are songs I’d never heard before encountering them on the big screen, but yesterday’s SOTD and today’s are exceptions.
‘Sweet Emotion’ – Dazed and Confused
I’m not a huge Aerosmith fan, but I was familiar enough with ‘Sweet Emotion’ before seeing Richard Linklater’s 1993 film Dazed and Confused. But after seeing the movie, I would never hear it the same way again.
The song plays over one of my favorite opening credits sequences in all of cinema. I can’t hear the building intro of ‘Sweet Emotion’ without picturing the Gramercy logo, and when the vocals kick in, I imagine that orange Pontiac GTO making a slow-mo arc through the high school parking lot.
Linklater then establishes his setting while introducing the film’s main characters in a series of quick shots that teleport us to 1976. He uses period songs memorably throughout the film, but this one sticks with me the most.
Here’s the opening credits sequence, and the full song is below.
Sweet emotion
You talk about things that nobody cares
You’re wearing out things that nobody wears
You’re calling my name but I gotta make clear
I can’t say baby where I’ll be in a year
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
When some sweet hog mama with a face like a gent
Said my get up and go must’ve got up and went
Well I got good news, she’s a real good liar
‘Cause the backstage boogie set your pants on fire
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Sweet emotion
Sweet emotion
When I pulled into town in a police car
Your daddy said I took it just a little too far
You’re telling me things but your girlfriend lied
You can’t catch me ’cause the rabbit done died
Yes it did
You stand in the front just a shakin’ your ass
I’ll take you backstage, you can drink from my glass
You’re telling me things I can sure understand
‘Cause a month on the road an’ I’ll be eating from your hand
I’m not sure I ever saw this movie. If I did, I have no memory of it. Watching this opening, however, makes me want to see the movie (again?).
Incidentally, it’s hard to hear this song without thinking of the Aerosmith Rock ‘n Rollercoaster. Now, THAT’S a thrilling opening!
I clearly need to see this movie again!
Don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie either, not sure I want to š
