Hozier’s ‘Take Me to Church’ was a huge hit but the sort of song one could easily see as a one-hit wonder.
It’s weird and gothic in a way not many Top 10 songs are, and I can imagine Hozier slipping into obscurity (playing for a small but fervent fan base) before becoming a staple on the charts.
I don’t know if his next single, ‘Someone New,’ will prove me wrong, but it has the potential. It has the same bluesy edge he brought to ‘Take Me to Church’ but an even more accessible chorus.
I like the video, too, which features Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer wandering lonely while imagining herself in relationships with the people she passes.
You knew who I was with every step that I ran to you
Only blue or black days
Electing strange perfections in any stranger I choose
Would things be easier if there was a right way?
Honey, there is no right way
[Chorus]
So I fall in love just a little, oh little bit
Everyday with someone new
I fall in love just a little, oh little bit
Everyday with someone new
I fall in love just a little, oh little bit
Everyday with someone new
I fall in love just a little, oh little bit
Everyday with someone new
There’s an art to life’s distraction
Some how escape the burning way the art of scraping through
Some like to imagine
The dark caress of someone else I guess any thrill will do
Would things be easier if there was a right way?
Honey, there is no right way
[Chorus]
I wake at the first cringe of morning
And my heart’s already sinned
How pure, how sweet your love
Aretha, can you pray for him
Cause God knows…
[Chorus]
Luck with every stranger
The stranger the better (x4)
[Chorus]
I too wondered if Hozier would be a one hit wonder, but, after hearing today’s song, I suspect, or at least hope, that won’t be the case.
Love this one too
