Thurston Moore, lead singer and guitarist of Sonic Youth, is releasing his fourth solo album, The Best Day, next month.

I’m ashamed to say I know nothing about Sonic Youth. If you put a gun to my head, I’d say they are a tuneful punk-rock band, a precursor to Nirvana.

Am I close?

Sonic Youth is a band that a well-versed music fan should know, in the way a well-versed movie fan should know Coppola or Truffaut.

Or maybe that’s a terrible analogy. I don’t know, because I’m unfamiliar with Sonic Youth.

This solo track supports my impression of Sonic Youth, assuming Moore hasn’t strayed too far from his band’s sound. So maybe I’m more tuned in than I think.
