Every time I hear a Jimmy Buffett song, I instantly wish I lived in a beachside trailer, making enough money selling seashell art to keep my boat in good repair.
I’d eat what I caught with my rod or my nets, and drink something cold from a can or the blender. I wouldn’t wear a shirt unless I was expecting company, and even then I wouldn’t bother buttoning it. I’d wake with the sunrise and laugh at the tourists with a circle of friends just like me.
It’s quite a feat for a song to transport me to that state of mind, because I normally hate the thought of such a lifestyle. I’d go nuts after a weekend, desperate for a wi-fi connection and a multiplex.
But it’s a credit to Buffett’s songwriting that he paints such a beautiful portrait, in sound and words, of island life. For three minutes at a time, he serves up paradise (with a cheeseburger, naturally) and I’m right on board.
Visitors just scored on the home rink.
Everything seems to be wrong.
Lately, newspaper mentioned cheap airfare.
I’ve got to fly to Saint Somewhere.
I’m close to bodily harm.
Chorus
Twenty degrees and the hockey game’s on.
Nobody cares; they are way too far gone,
screamin’ “Boat drinks,” somethin’
to keep them all warm.
This morning I shot six holes in my freezer.
I think I got cabin fever.
Somebody sound the alarm.
I’d like to go where the pace of life’s slow.
Could you beam me somewhere, Mister Scott?
Any old place here on Earth or in space.
You pick the century and I’ll pick the spot.
I know I should be leaving this climate.
I got a verse but can’t rhyme it.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
Boat drinks.
Waitress, I need two more boat drinks.
Then I’m headin south ‘fore my dream shrinks.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
I gotta go where there ain’t any snow,
where there ain’t any blow,
’cause my fin sinks so low.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
I totally agree 🙂
I get what you are saying, but I’m also happily transported to a lovely beach side resort with a strawberry-banana smoothie in one hand and my iPad in the other. 🙂
It is a special gift to be able to create such a mood with one song. I agree that Buffet has that gift.
