When it comes to old school guitar-driven rock-n-roll, you can’t get much better than Tom Petty. Through 38 years and 16 albums, he has delivered the goods consistently and expertly.
His latest record, Hypnotic Eye, is performed (as all but three of his albums have been) with The Heartbreakers, and the band’s familiarity with each other and the material shines through on every track. This is as beautifully seasoned as a rock band gets.
Hypnotic Eye is Petty’s best record since 2006’s Highway Companion. It’s a grungier record than that solo offering, thanks to the presence of The Heartbreakers, littered with memorable guitar riffs. The riff on today’s track, ‘All you Can Carry,’ is hard to beat.
My personal Tom Petty pantheon includes Damn the Torpedoes, Southern Accents, Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers. This record sits on a tier just below those, which is a fine place to sit.
At 64 years old, Tom Petty is as relevant as ever playing a style of music that the industry has pretty much forgotten. That’s an amazing accomplishment.
And then my mind ran away with me
I had a vision in the changing light
Something saying that it’s time to leave
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
We gotta run
I saw the flames come across the ridge
Falling ashes in the northern wind
You and I have burned every bridge
And now we’ve got to save our souls again
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
We gotta run
There’s something moving in the dark outside
I gotta face it when it hits the light
No one can say I didn’t have your side
No one can say I left without a fight
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
Take what you can, all you can carry
Take what you can and leave the past behind
We gotta run
I’ve heard most of this album at least once through and am enjoying it a great deal. I notice you didn’t mention Mojo as a more recent successful effort. I thought that was a decent record as well.
