The LEGO Movie is the happiest surprise of the year so far. What could have been a crass attempt to market an already over-exposed toy line is instead a witty, wise and subversive burst of ecstatic filmmaking.
This kids’ movie is both the funniest and one of the most profound films of the year. It’s also the most visually impressive, with every inch of the frame put to brilliant use.
This marks the second appearance of Chris Pratt in my top five, and his very different performances as two very different heroes are proof that he’s a special talent. The voice work in The LEGO Movie is terrific across the board, with special recognition owed to Morgan Freeman for his self-mocking turn.
The LEGO Movie is the most rewatchable movie of the year so far. I’ve seen it three times already and can’t wait to see it again — each viewing reveals new laughs, new details.
The film is a shoo-in for the Best Animated Film Oscar but I hope the Academy has the good humor and the good sense to put it up for Best Picture as well.
Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is awesome, when you’re living out a dream
[Verse: Tegan and Sara]
Everything is better when we stick together
Side by side you and I are gonna win forever
Let’s party forever
We’re the same I’m like you, you’re like me
We are a working harmony
[Chorus: Tegan and Sara]
[Verse: The Lonely Island]
Woooo! 3, 2, 1, go!
Have you heard the news? Everyone’s talkin’
Life is good ‘cause everything awesome
Lost my job, there’s a new opportunity
More free time for my awesome community
I feel more awesome than an awesome possum
Dip my body in chocolate frostin’
Three years later wash off the frostin’
Smellin’ like a blossom, everything is awesome
Stepped in mud, got some new brown shoes
It’s awesome to win and it’s awesome to lose
[Verse: Tegan and Sara]
Everything is better when we stick together
Side by side, you and I gonna win forever?
Let’s party forever
We’re the same, I’m like you, you’re like me we are working in harmony
[Chorus: Tegan and Sara]
[Verse: The Lonely Island]
Blue skies, bouncy springs, we just named two awesome things
A Nobel prize, a piece of string
You know what’s awesome? Everything!
Dogs with fleas, allergies
A book of Greek antiquities
Brand new pants, a very old vest
Awesome items are the best
Trees, frogs, clogs, they’re awesome
Rocks, clocks, and socks, they’re awesome
Figs, and jigs, and twigs, that’s awesome
Everything you see or think or say is awesome
[Chorus: Tegan and Sara]
This really was an “awesome” movie. I only saw it once, but your post makes me want to see it again.
Yeah, your post makes me want to see it too–good review.
