Winding down this week of critics’ picks, I have to say so far I’m more impressed by the Billboard Top 10. Sure, I had to put up with Jason Derulo, but I also got Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem’ (Song of the Summer!), Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sing’ and several other gems.
The critical faves have been annoying or boring for the most part.
But I have high hopes for this last entry, based solely on the band name and song title.
You have to give the benefit of the doubt to a band that names itself after one of the most memorable characters in Roald Dahl’s classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And ‘The Museum of Broken Relationships’ is a lovely image. So let’s see if the song is any good.
OK, I enjoyed that. Nothing deep, but it’s catchy. Apparently Veruca Salt was a 90s band that broke up before the new millennium and reformed for this album. You can tell by their sound, which is very much in the spirit of the grunge-y decade in which they formed.
So we end on a relatively high note. But it’s still no Ariana Grande.
In the garden of rejection, the broken people go
There’s a hook where you can hang your heart
Frame it on the wall and let it go
Halalala let it go
Exhibition is of the essence, it’s what we come here for
Put the relics of your lost love on display
And lock the door
Halalala lock the door
He’s a cheater, a bottom feeder
In this box a lock of his hair
Jubilation, he loves me again
Halalala I don’t care
(Chorus)
Halalala I don’t care
Halalala halalala
Halalala I don’t care
Jubilation, he loves me again x4
And no Ed Sheeran! (“Sing” – Song of the Summer!)
