Song of the Day #2,165: ‘You and Me’ – Damon Albarn

damon_albarnDamon Albarn is a new name to me, but it turns out I’ve been at least passingly familiar with his work for nearly 25 years.

Albarn was the frontman for the British pop band Blur, probably best known for ‘Song 2,’ the “woo hoo” song. He later formed Gorillaz, a “virtual” band that was made up of rotating musicians but always represented as cartoon apes.

Albarn has worked on other, lesser-known, side projects as well, but this year he released his first proper solo album, Everyday Robots.

This track is a collaboration with Brian Eno and definitely has Eno’s emo-techno sound.

It takes an interesting turn about halfway through from avant garde into more of a folk-soul hybrid. The second half is definitely better, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the meandering lead-in.

[Verse 1]
I met Moko Jumbi
He walks on stilts through all saints row
Looking over the brew now, for a possession loss
People sound, no days off
In September, when the sun sets sooner

[Chorus 1]
In you, it radiates on you
Seven high they’re rising
Over on the other side
Of September when the sun sets sooner

[Verse 2]
Jab jab, digging out a hole in Westbourne Grove
Tin foil and a lighter, the ship across
Five days on, two days off, in September
When the sun sets sooner

[Chorus 1 x2]

[Instrumental intermezzo]

[Chorus 2 x2]
You can blame me
Blame me
Blame me
Blame me
When the twilight comes
All goes round again
All goes round again
All goes round again
All goes round again
All goes round again

[Verse 3]
Some days I look at the morning trying to work out how I got here
Cause the distance between us is the glamour’s cost
Late night on the shop floor what language was i speaking
Not sure I remember the thrill and fall
Always in me
Let it go

[Chorus 2 x2]

Well, this is certainly more pleasant to hear first thing in the morning than yesterday’s selection. It may be a bit too atmospheric for repeat listening, but not bad.
