I have a feeling Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show will provide fodder for this blog for years to come.
The man is an unapologetic fan of so many musicians, not to mention a damn fine musician himself, and he never passes up an opportunity to turn a standard guest spot into a YouTube moment.
This one comes courtesy of Billy Joel and an app that loops recorded vocals. Fallon and Joel lay down the backing tracks and record a lo-fi doo-wop version of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight.’
(A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh)
In the jungle, the mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle the quiet jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
Near the village the peaceful village
The lion sleeps tonight
Near the village the quiet village
The lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling don’t fear my darling
The lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling don’t fear my darling
The lion sleeps tonight
As soon as we saw this, Daniel immediately looked into downloading the looping app. It’s $9.99 on iTunes. We held off on buying it because I’m not sure we would really use it more than a few times once the novelty wore off.
Such a great appearance by Joel on Fallon. We have been having a bit of a Billy Joel renaissance of late in our family courtesy of the Billy Joel channel on Sirius XM. It’s.been wonderful to re-experience his music with our kids, and I have played the role of the geeky fan who knows WAY too much behind the scenes info as we listen to his songs.
For those who may not have seen Fallon doing “You May be Right” on that same show, here it is:
